cALL on the cArPet
Your grandmother’s home remedy for cleaning up carpet stains with
club soda still works today. But don’t wait until you’ve finished your
Virgin Bloody Mary to sop up the mess! First, lift off any solids spilled on
the carpet; then liberally pour on club soda, and blot the area with an
old rag. The soda's carbonation will bring the spill to the surface, and
the salts in the soda will thwart staining. For bigger spills, try dumping
cornmeal on the mess, wait five to fifteen minutes; then vacuum.

Many commercial air fresheners contain toxic chemicals like
formaldehyde and petroleum distillates. But you can create a wonderful
natural aroma by placing one to two teaspoons of vanilla extract in
small containers placed around your home. Or try setting out some
potpourri made from lavender and roses. Do you drink green tea? Then
don’t throw out those leaves! Tea leaves actually contain antibacterial
properties and have a long tradition of being used as a deodorizer. To
use, simply squeeze out as much moisture from the leaves after brewing
as possible, emptying from the tea bags if needed. Then, spread out
to dry on unprinted paper and place in bowls positioned where odors
frequently occur.
shoeLess, not cLUeLess
Your shoes are toxin terrorists tracking in antifreeze, animal waste,
particulate pollution, pollen and who knows what else into your home.
A “leave your shoes at the door” policy and a good doormat not
only means less unwanted toxins in your home, but it also means less
sweeping, mopping and cleaning up!
