CARDIFF MARDI GRAS
Coopers Field, Cardiff (and various city-wide haunts) Sat 29 Aug
words JAMIE REES photo DOM STOCQUELERa
When I woke up on the morning of this year’s Cardiff Wales Mardi Gras, it was with great trepidation that I
pulled back the curtains after last year’s monsoon led to the event being cancelled.
Thankfully, the sun shone on Cardiff’s gay fest this year and the park was packed with revellers from families
to fag hags and, of course, gays galore! 45,000 crammed onto Cooper’s Field, to be exact and, while the vibe
was party, party, party, the ‘main’ stage, which ended early with no explanation whatsoever, was not good to
say the least.
Don’t get me wrong: headliners Blazin Squad did their thing getting the crowd mildly moist, but there were
far too many ‘local’ singers for my liking – and I use the word singers loosely, because you actually need to
be able to sing to be a singer. Yep, this event was more of a limp wrist than the punchy Manchester and Bir-
mingham Pride events. Thank goodness for Cardiff’s superb drag queens, that’s all I can say – and a special
mention must go to the hilarious Dr Bev and Tina Sparkle.
The cabaret tent, meanwhile, was far more successful with The Raymond & Mr Timpkins Revue stealing the
day with their madcap comedy.
As we partied into the night, I decided to do a tour of Cardiff’s gay scene. The Golden Cross proved the place
to be with the atmosphere, live cabaret and super-friendly bar staff making for a brilliant pre-club session. I
had to draw the line at Same Difference however – those stupid siblings are psychotic and disturbing at best.
Then off to Pulse, where the street party was rammed and their main stage was far more appealing than that
of the Mardi Gras itself. Ruth Lorenzo fully deserved the shrieks and whistle blowing from the huge crowd
– what a belter!
So, while the rain stayed away, there was still something distinctly damp about Wales’s Mardi Gras. But if
this Pride event can’t compete with the other big hitters around the country, then I can say with no doubt at
all that Cardiff’s gay scene certainly can!
