Director’s Statement
Before going to film school, I worked at a
residential facility for at-risk teenagers in
San Diego. The wing that I worked on was
“short term 12,” a section meant for the
kids who were expected to be more-or-less “temporary” (though
many of them were there from the time they were 12 until they
were 18). Working in this environment was one of the most
intense experiences of my life, as every day I witnessed what
these kids were being forced to deal with because of the poor
choices of their parents.
It was really scary to me, this incredible impact that parents can
have on their children. It forced me to ask questions and see the
world in a way I hadn’t before. In late 2007, I decided to make
a movie based on my experiences there.
