It’s worth reading...
MATTHEW PERREN RECOMMENDS
The Winter Vault by Anne Michaels
I’ve been waiting 11 years for Anne Michaels to write the follow
up to the Orange Prize-winning Fugitive Pieces. And it’s every
bit as good as I’d hoped. Rich and complex in plot, it deals with
displacement across a spectrum of scenarios; war, the loss of a
child, separation, death, dislocation, relocation. It is a compelling
read and the ending hints at hope and a new beginning.
Scotland 2010 by Adrian Hollister
Sorry to break this to you but Christmas is coming. What do you
give to those poor benighted souls who are unfortunate enough
not to live in Scotland? I suggest you seek this out. Adrian
Hollister has put together a stunning collection of his own
photographs, interleaved them with some lovely, appreciative
text of his travels throughout our land and then turned the
whole thing into an elegant diary. Not that you’d want to write
in it (or indeed discard it at the end of the year), it’s one to keep
and gaze at when you are far from home. A great debut from a
very gifted photographer.
Wallpaper by Charlotte Abrahams
What a glorious visual treat this book is! I’ve scarcely been
able to put it down since it landed on my desk last week. The
text is largely nonsense but that’s not why you’d buy it. You’d
buy it for the hundreds of full-page, full-colour swatches of the
most fabulous wallpaper known to man. From the traditional
to the wacky by way of the kitsch and chic, this beautiful book
has it all.
Crap Lyrics by Johnny Sharp
As you will have ascertained if you read this column regularly,
I have no critical faculties whatsoever. So from the sublime to
the ridiculous is as familiar a route to me as the walk to work.
This is painfully funny though and really should be read by
anyone with even a passing interest in pop music. Truly awful
lyrics are a gift and doubly so when subjected to the scornful
and detailed criticism of Johnny Sharp. I had to lie on the floor
from laughing so much.
