MAMMOTH MAMMUT
HAWAII PREMIERE
MAMMOTH revolves around a successful New York couple, Leo (Gael Garcia Bernal,
BABEL) and Ellen (Michelle Williams, WENDY AND LUCY). Leo is the creator of a
booming website, and has stumbled into a world of money and big decisions. Ellen is a
dedicated emergency surgeon who devotes her long shifts to saving lives. Their eight-
year-old daughter Jackie spends most of her time with her Filipino nanny Gloria, a situ-
ation that is making Ellen start to question her priorities. Gloria has come to the USA
to earn money to support her family, leaving her two sons behind in the Philippines.
One of them, ten-year-old Salvador, is longing for his mother so much that he looks
for work himself in order to help with the money and speed up her return. When Leo
travels to Thailand on business, he unwittingly sets off a chain of events that will have
dramatic consequences for everyone.

MARY & MAX
HAWAII PREMIERE
This amazing claymation film, from Academy-Award winning filmmaker Adam Elliot
(for animated short film Harvie Krumpet), tells the dark but heartwarming story of an
unusual and unlikely pen-pal friendship between two misfits from very different walks
of life. After randomly choosing a name in a New York phonebook, Mary Dinkle, a
chubby, lonely, 8-year-old Australian girl, begins corresponding with Max Horowitz, a
44-year-old, severely obese, Jewish-American man with Asperger syndrome, to ask
where American babies come from. Though initially reacting severely to her letter,
Max writes back and a pen-pal relationship blooms. Max and Mary chronicles their
correspondences, as well as their lives and the lives of the people around them,
exploring everything from alcoholism, bullying, and religion to chocolate, pets, and
mood rings. This visual masterpiece deftly explores the absurdities of life, as seen
through the eyes of two very different, but similar people. – Jennifer Waihee

THE NECESSITIES OF LIFE
HAWAII PREMIERE
After being diagnosed with tuberculosis, Tivii (Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner), an Inuit
hunter from Baffin Island, is unexpectedly forced from his isolated home terrain by
Canadian authorities and quarantined in a Quebec City tuberculosis sanitarium.
Concerned for his family’s survival, isolated from everything he knows, and stuck in a
confusing environment with people he cannot understand, Tivii slides into a deep
depression and loses his will to live. Realizing the real threat to his wellbeing, Tivii’s
nurse orchestrates the transfer of Kaki, a similarly afflicted Inuit orphan boy, to the san-
itarium. Kaki’s presence invigorates Tivii’s spirits. Having been separated from his
native culture for years, Kaki is able to serve as Tivii’s translator and bridge to the new
world around him. In turn, Tivii takes a fatherly
interest in Kaki, teaching him traditional Inuit
customs and myths. – Jennifer Waihee
