MESSAGE FROM THE GOVERNOR
AND LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR
On behalf of the people of Hawai‘i, we send our personal greetings of
aloha to everyone attending the 2009 Hawai‘i International Film Festival.
Located as a geographical and cultural bridge in the Pacific, Hawai‘i
serves as an ideal site for the nation’s largest “East-meets-West” film
festival. Since 1981, the Hawai‘i International Film Festival
has brought great pride to our state. Today, the festival draws more
than 80,000 people from across our nation and world. We appreciate
the ways in which the festival utilizes the power of film to enrich
and enlighten audiences and promote cultural understanding
between Hawai‘i and our Pacific neighbors.
We offer a warm mahalo to festival sponsors, members and volunteers
for making this exciting event a success each year. Our best wishes for a
memorable festival and continued success in future endeavors.

MAYOR MUFI HANNEMANN
The mega-budgets, frenetic action and mass marketing of so many
contemporary Hollywood blockbusters stand in stark contrast to the
films featured at the Hawaii International Film Festival. Here for our
enjoyment and reflection are the art, ideas and creativity of filmmakers
from around the world, who labor without the tools of their Hollywood
counterparts, but nevertheless capture the remarkable diversity of our
world, our humanity and spirit, and the magic of movies. I congratulate
the sponsors, organizers and film-lovers on what will be another
unique and successful Hawaii International Film Festival.
