SPOTLIGHT ON THE PHILIPPINES
PRESENTED BY L&L HAWAIIAN BARBECUE
GRANDPA IS DEAD DED NA SI LOLO
INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE
In Soxie Topacio’s hilarious opus, the Filipino funeral is born anew. Deconstructed into
several “pamahiin” (or folk wisdom) and structured over the course of a week-long
wake, DED NA SI LOLO is the story of a family forced by circumstances to reunite and
bear each other’s companies while a wake for their dead father is held. Although the
Hernandezes have the tendency to be massively dramatic about their grief in public,
their solidarity and care for each other are revealed in private moments interacted far
from the vigilant crowd. As we get to know more about this family through their per-
sonal stories, and observing them laugh and bicker with each other, we see that in life
and in death, Filipinos deal the best way they know how to:
together. Brilliantly cathartic, DED NA SI LOLO shows that
Filipino cinema is alive and well in this story of life’s triumph
over death. – Siege Malvar

IF I KNEW WHAT YOU SAID DINIG SANA KITA
U.S. PREMIERE
Talented musician Nina Sevilla (Zoe Sandejas) has difficulty controlling her anger. When
a physical altercation lands her in trouble at school, Nina is forced to attend a camp
where teens must work with deaf teens and find alternate means to communicate with
one another. She meets Kiko Reyes (Romalito Mallari), who is deaf, and although their
first meeting is a bit rocky, Kiko’s gentle and patient manner, soon wins her over. When
Nina learns that Kiko has a passion for dancing, their love of music creates a strong
bond between the two. While their friendship thrives at camp, things are difficult in the
world outside, as they must find ways to adapt to each other’s
world. Since winning the Audience Choice Award at the 2009
Cinemalaya, IF I KNEW WHAT YOU SAID has had continued
success selling out at theater houses in the Philippines.
