ALOHA
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
HIFF’s 29th Anniversary theme “What Do You See’” clearly refers to each of our person-
al reactions to and feelings raised by the films that we see. A friend reminds me that
the theme also refers to what one sees at HIFF. Films are definitely the first things to
see. Our Opening, Centerpiece Gala, and Closing Film are annual HIFF must-sees. Don’t
miss the world premiere of the much anticipated made-in-Hawaii feature BARBARIAN
PRINCESS at the Hawaii Theatre on October 16th, Princess Kaiulani’s birthday.
Seminars, master classes, panels, and after-film discussions are HIFF must-sees as well.
“HIFF Celebrates LOST” at the Royal Hawaiian Theater in Waikiki is a unique event, pre-
ceded by three very special Master Classes at Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 Cinemas.
The creative team, co-executive producers, cast, and crew of Hawaii’s beloved LOST will
be on stage to discuss their award-wining series and to answer your questions.
“What Do You See” is also frequently asked by one HIFF fan to another. What films and
other events do you go to see at HIFF? Our surveys find that the number one way people
hear and know about HIFF is through friends and colleagues. Tell your friends and neigh-
bors what you see at HIFF and help spread the word.
See you at the movies!

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
Aloha and welcome to the 29th Hawaii International Film Festival!
This year has been a particularly challenging year for everyone, including non profit
organizations like HIFF. I am especially proud of the HIFF staff and volunteers for their
determination and willingness to go the extra mile to ensure another great Fall
Showcase filled with a variety of events, seminars, and a selection of the best and
newest in Asia Pacific Rim cinema.
We are sincerely grateful for the continuing consideration and support provided by our
Festival Sponsors in these difficult times. We are also extremely fortunate and privi-
leged to have an enthusiastic core base of support in the HIFF Ohana Membership,
whose year-round encouragement and passionate dedication to HIFF play a vital role in
the organization’s ability to persevere and evolve.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you all for helping to make this 29th Fall
Showcase possible. We hope the Hawaii community along with our industry delegates
and international guests can enjoy the wonderful showcase of international film
planned over the next 10 days.
Mahalo Nui Loa.
