SYMBOL SHINBORU
Hitoshi Matsumoto (DAINIPPONJIN, HIFF 2007) is back with his second feature film
SYMBOL, a mind-melting journey into the deepest realm of the imagination. A
Japanese man (played by Matsumoto) wakes up alone in a brightly illuminated white
room with no windows or doors. His absurd and hilarious attempts to escape the
gleaming room releases random objects from the walls, creating a life-sized Mouse
Trap game in which a rope, a toilet plunger and an earthenware jug full of sushi just
might be the keys to his escape. A hugely popular comedian in Japan, Hitoshi
Matsumoto has a finely honed, deadpan approach to absurdist humor. His exuberant
and audacious sophomore effort will provoke thought, laughter and some manic head
scratching. SYMBOL delivers a stunning visual feast while taking the outlandishness
of each scene to dizzying heights.

LOVE EXPOSURE / FACE
VAMPIRE GIRL VS FRANKENSTEIN GIRL
HAWAII PREMIERE
The team that bore MACHINE GIRL and TOKYO GORE POLICE return with their latest
mutated movie creation! Jyugon is a typical student whose high school happens to be a
haunt for sociopaths and freaks. Among them is the vice-principal’s daughter, Keiko, who
has unilaterally claimed him as her boyfriend. Jyugon’s life changes on Valentine’s Day
when he meets Monami; a pretty, soft-spoken transfer student who expresses her affec-
tions for Jyugon by giving him chocolate. Unfortunately, Jyugon soon discovers the
change may not have been for the better. Apparently, Monami’s confection was filled
with her own blood, and she is actually a vampire. Keiko, meanwhile, is not about to let
the new girl take her man without a fight, even after being killed in a freak accident.
Following her transformation into a Frankenstein-type monster, she and Monami engage
in an epic battle where blood is sprayed, limbs are severed, and anyone on campus who
gets in their way is annihilated. – John Waihee IV
