Story and Photos by Loney Wilcoxson
For a long time if you lived in the Northland and
wanted to go to a good sized bike night, you had to head
south of the river. Well folks, a little Northland bike night is
all grown up and challenging the big boys. I am of course
talking about the Wednesday night bike night at Stables
Grill in Kearney, Missouri. What started out as a pretty de-
cent bike night, has grown into a full-on must-attend
event every week. We have been going to Stables bike
night for a few years now and it just keeps getting bigger.
There is always something new going on to keep things
interesting, and the location can’t be beat. Who wants to
ride 10 minutes to bike night? I sure don’t. Stables Grill
is close enough to get to plenty early but just far enough
to give you a bit of a ride on the way in.
With the move to a larger location in the same shop-
ping center, owner Shawn Barber brought out his A-
game. Plenty of outdoor seating, great musical
entertainment, fair prices, and plenty of room for park-
ing, the 500-plus bikes that make the trek to their door
have made Stables Grill a true player in the battle for your
bike night business. All the bikes are parked in plain view
on a real live paved parking lot. You have the choice of
ample outdoor, patio or indoor seating attended by a pro-
fessional and courteous wait staff.
With all the above-mentioned amenities, you would
think Shawn would be satisfied to just relax and let things
happen. No such luck. How many bike nights have you
gone to hungry? Do you get tired of the same old tacos or
burgers? The remaining ace up Stables’ sleeve is Exec-
utive Chef Charles Perkins. That’s right; I said Chef! And
before you even think about it, a Chef on staff does not
mean unaffordable. I am by no means anywhere close
to extravagant with my meager earnings, and I can afford
to eat at Stables Grill all the time. Yes, that’s right; great
food that is affordable. I recommend the Cajun mussels.
If the Bike Night at Stables Grill was not as good as I
say it is, would our buddies from Hardcore Customs
make the trip to Kearney every Wednesday night? I don’t
think so. So get on your bike and see what everybody is
talking about. Kearney is only about 10 minutes north of
Liberty, Missouri on I-35, and Stables Grill is right on the
corner of I-35 and Hwy 92. It couldn’t be easier to find. If
that doesn’t help, put 627 West State Route 92 Hwy.,
Kearney, MO 64060 into your GPS and you’ll have no ex-
cuse not to be at the fastest growing bike night on the
Midwest Coast.
