qualified winners for a chance to win. There were
a total of twenty-five entrants and each one was
given a sealed envelope and told not to open it
until they got on stage. Once on stage, they were
allowed to open the envelope which contained a
four-digit code that was to be used for a combi-
nation lock suspended from the left mirror. One by
one, they came up and twisted the tumblers try-
ing, hoping, and praying that it would undo the
lock. But for many it wouldn’t budge.
After several had already tried, a woman and
her husband walked up on stage and she gave her
name and residence, like the others and then
opened the envelope. She walked to the bike and
with hands shaking, twisted the numbers, putting
in her combination. With the fourth number in
place she pulled on the lock and it slipped open.
She stared in disbelief, and then her eyes lit up,
and she started yelling and cheering as she real-
ized that she had just won the bike! The crowd
went crazy in celebration and after many photos,
hugs, and congratulations, Lisa Welch of Inde-
pendence, Missouri went to celebrate with her
husband, while her brand new bike was prepped
for the trip to its new home. Good job, Lisa!
With the big entertainment over, the “Cars 4
Heroes” van given away, and the KFKF bike given
away, the afternoon wound down quickly. Soon
the whine of jet turbines could be heard firing up
and then the deep thudding sound of rotating
blades filled the air as the helicopters lifted off. With
a victory lap overhead, they sped away, leaving
each of us to think about why we were there in the
first place. You couldn’t help but think of the past
couple of days and remember that long, dark, and
tragic day, eight years ago which will forever be
etched in our hearts. Thanks to Gail’s Harley-
Davidson for hosting and to all that participated,
and remember to keep the memory alive and to
“Never Forget”.
See you next year.
