Restaurant of the Month
The Mermaid
686 Mumbles Road, Mumbles, SA3 4EE
Few restaurants can claim to be as fl exible as
the Mermaid. Its interior splits neatly into a large,
laid-back lounge full of comfy sofas, and an airy
dining room where anything from intimate dining
to large parties can be catered for with ease.
Open from 11am right through to the evening,
the restaurant offers a changing selection of
food and drink.
You can stop by in the morning for proper Italian
coffee with chocolate brownies; take your
time over a glass of wine in the afternoon (the
Mermaid has a full license, so you don’t have
to order food); call in with the kids for snacky
tapas; or relax in the restaurant area over a light
lunch, which will set you back just £12.95 for
two courses including vegetables and home-
made bread.
“The kids tend
to like platters of
things like goats
cheese, roasted
vine tomatoes,
cucumbers,
and celery.”
NICK BEVAN
Equally good value for money is offered in the
evening, when the table d’hote menu offers two
courses for £15. Running alongside this is a full
a la carte menu, offering dishes such as pan-
fried ox cheek salad with soused vegetables and
horseradish dressing, followed by slow-baked
Gower pork with home-made pork sausage,
roasted loin of pork and a coarse grain mustard
jus.
Chef-proprietor Nick Bevan is well-known locally,
having previously worked at the Dylan Thomas
Centre, then at the Chelsea restaurant just
off Wind Street. By the time he moved to The
Mermaid fi ve years ago, he had gathered plenty
of loyal customers.
Flanked by head chef Gareth Bradley — who
previously worked under Michael Caines at two
Michelin-starred Gidleigh Park — Nick produces
