The Center Celebrates its 10th Birthday in Style
In celebration of a decade of success and looking forward
to a bright future, the Danforth Center opened its doors to
welcome an estimated 5,000 people to this unprecedented
community open house on September 28th.
Starting with a “vine-cutting” ceremony for the new
Greenhouse II building, guests enjoyed more than 40
activities throughout the day. These included tours,
informative “close-ups” of Danforth Center facilities, and
research presentations by Center scientists. In addition
to special activities for children, visitors sampled foods
that are featured in Center research, learned about
community scientific partnerships, and viewed the
Danforth Center’s new video. Other highlights included
the Kempducky Derby – a duck race held in the Kemper
Reflecting Pool, and blowing out the candles on a large
Danforth Center replica cake made from cassava flour.
The fun and informative day ended with a special
performance by members of the St. Louis Symphony in
the AT&T Auditorium.
The day was a great success and would not have been
possible without the hard work and generosity of event
co-chairs Dan and Connie Burkhardt, Center Friends and
Volunteers, our educational and community partners, the
City of Creve Coeur, Danforth Center staff and scientists,
and all who took the time to attend and participate!
