An Ocotillo resident, Lawrence says other malls have challenges when they
are not locally owned.
“I can’t stress enough the importance of local ownership and working with
small business owners. You need to be entrepreneurial to fi ll spaces, and we’re
getting more involved with our tenants to help them out.”
He believes it’s just “bad luck” for the Ocotillo Plaza with Target and Bashas’
planning to close.
“It’s hard to take, but it’s a natural cycle. If you look at the success of
D’Vine, another tenant of ours, they are doing wonderfully. Anytime Fitness is
growing; Keegan’s is doing well; Paradise Bakery is doing well; and Grimaldi’s
is growing.
“It surprised me to see Bashas’ choose to close, and AJs defi nitely hurts us,
because we’re all in this together,” he laments. “My friends from other parts of
town read that and wonder if it’s an indictment on this part of town. It’s not,
but it affects us, and it’s a negative we have to overcome.”
Ever enthusiastic, Lawrence continues to point out the positives, such as
the successes of Downtown Ocotillo’s Leidan Mitchell, which “is doing terrifi c;
I’m really happy about their success.” He also says Fresh & Easy is doing well,
as is Dr. Stephanie Harris, a “wonderful dentist” in her fi rst-time practice. He
says he’s “appreciative” of businesses such as Sauce, Egg & I, Enclave, Taste of
History, Port of Subs and others that are also open and doing well.
Lawrence & Geyser is also working in other areas of the Valley, remodeling
a historic building this fall on the northeast corner of Seventh Avenue and
McDowell in Phoenix, which will include two more restaurants; and the
company just fi nished a remodel at 12th Street and Glendale.
“We love urban stuff, and we love uniqueness,” he concludes. “We continue
to encourage people to shop in Ocotillo, shop Chandler and support your local
businesses.”
