Today, the word ‘bunting’ is associated
with children’s parties, fetes, carnivals and
is also a chic and stylish accessory for the
home. Triangular bunting made out of many
pretty patterned materials to drape across a
room or table can be bought in almost any
home-ware store.
However, originally, bunting was named
‘bewpars’ and was used on naval ships as
a method for certain communications when
at sea. It was very useful for indicating the
Senior Officers Ship when several warships
of the same Navy were alongside or at
anchor in port.
Traditionally, they were made from thin
cloths of woven wool, which was the most
suitable material as it was light enough
to spread well even in gentle winds, and

wind than many heavier materials.
