Principles for Serving Adult Learners Effectively
1. Outreach: Overcome barriers of time, place and tradition to ease access.
2. Life & Career Planning: Address an adult learner’s life and career goals before or at the onset of enrollment in
order to align the school and its services with the learner’s goals.
3. Financing: Make available an array of payment options for adult learners.
4. Assess Learning Outcomes: Do so using the curriculum and life/work experience, but always confer degrees
with rigor.
5. Teaching-Learning: Be sure the faculty uses multiple methods of instruction, including experiential and
problem-based methods. Connect curricular concepts to useful knowledge and skills.
6. Student Support Systems: Use academic and student support systems that enhance students’ abilities to
become self-directed, lifelong learners.
7. Technology: Use information technology to provide relevant and timely information and to enhance the
learning experience.
8. Strategic Partnerships: Engage with employers and other relevant organizations.
9. Transitions: Provide guided pathways into and from the school’s programs and services.
