As we strive to build greater support for childhood cancer
research, CureSearch plans to grow the number of its annual
walks. In 2009, more than 10 walks are planned, including
the online CureSearch Virtual Walk to Conquer Kids’ Cancer.
New Virtual Walk
To mark Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September,
CureSearch launched the “Virtual Walk for 12,500,” to honor
the 12,500 children who are diagnosed with cancer each
year. With the theme “take the hand of one of the 12,500
children who will be diagnosed this year,” the goal was to
unite 12,500 supporters via the web. In 2008, approximately
5,000 new donors and supporters joined this effort online,
which raised over $100,000.
A mother who participated in the Omaha
CureSearch MileStone Walk contacted us:
“Rachael is now one year post treatment
and cancer free. We owe her health to... the
Children’s Oncology Group (COG). Without
their research and communication with
each other (across the US and with other
countries), Rachael would not have been
put on the treatment plan that saved her
life. Rachael was the fi rst child in Omaha
and Nebraska to follow the current
treatment plan for Wilms Tumor. ”
