a four-poster bed and private dressing room, while
the spacious Napoleon marble bathrooms are fitted
with heated floors. The Presidential Suites include a
kitchenette, study, lounge, and a dining room with a
fireplace and grand piano.
The conversion of the abandoned ‘astronomical’
tower is the apotheosis of RDD’s design
achievement. The Tower Suite comprises three floors,
each with the same footprint and entered from
the fourth, top level of the main hotel. Elegantly
furnished with Czech furniture and accessories,
including the lounge’s Halabala-style rug, the royal
upholstery tones contrast with the simple structure.
Large mirrors reflect the soaring spiral staircase
leading to the top of the tower - from the relatively
“closed” lounge up to the bathroom with its original
cross window and then continuing to the bedroom
with its stunning 360º views. Here, eight windows
ensure a breathtaking panorama but leave little
wall space, so a clever storage arrangement was
integrated into the generously sized headboard.
RDD’s design of The Augustine hotel strikes
a nuanced balance between chic, international
appeal for well-travelled, sophisticated guests and
the thoughtful restoration of a historical building in
the heart of Prague to an outstanding architectural
centrepiece. •
