S
ince the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 the
drive to rebuild and redefine the city has
sparked ambitious development projects. This
dynamism and Germany’s central location in Europe
makes Berlin a thriving centre for business and a
vibrant destination for tourists.
UK based designers, Jestico + Whiles’s fourth
hotel for the Andel’s brand of modern business hotels
capitalises on this. Andel’s Hotels are a small cluster
of design-led business hotels, which are a part of the
Vienna International stable.
The hotel makes a significant contribution to the
redevelopment of part of East Berlin, revitalising a
former apartment building by Studio Aldo Rossi near
Alexanderplatz. This unfinished concrete structure
had been abandoned shortly after the wall came
down and had remained empty ever since. Now,
the interiors of the hotel’s 550 bedrooms and suites,
bars, restaurants, lounges, ballroom, spa and a 3,000
delegate conference centre are unified by a classic
black and white theme.
The extensive lobby spaces connect the
bedroom concept with the world beyond. Here a
monochrome palette is enhanced with rich and
tactile materials and several individually styled
lounge zones with exclusive, individual and
complementary furniture pieces.
