T
he owners of the multi award winning Chaophraya restaurant have
recently opened a new branch, together with their bar concept known
as Palm Sugar Lounge, at Liverpool One in Liverpool.
Chaophraya (pronounced Chow-pie-a), named after the famous river in
Thailand, first opened its doors in Leeds in December 2004. This was followed
by the opening of a second restaurant in Manchester in November 2006 and,
with the aim of creating the finest Thai cuisine in the country, owner Kim
Atcharaporn Kaewkraikhot has recruited some of Thailand’s finest chefs.
The design brief for the restaurant and bar was to create two units that
work hand in hand as the ‘perfect couple’ or ‘Ging Tong By Yok’. Designers
Boyce Associates were appointed to provide suitable interiors where guests
could enjoy a five star fine dining experience that surpasses anything that
the country has seen before. That’s no idle boast; The Times have already
rated Chaophraya as ‘the number One vegetarian restaurant in the UK’ and The
Guardian says it is one of ‘the top three Thai restaurants in the UK’.
Chaophraya is the main river that runs
through the centre of Bangkok and so
the idea of introducing water & water
features into Chaophraya and Palm Sugar
became an important design element.
The aquarium glass lobby was a design
feature added to create impact for guests
as they enter Chaophraya. The water
theme continues upstairs in the a la carte
restaurant. A two-sided aquarium between
the male and female toilets allows vision
through to both areas but still provides the
right element of discretion; the aquarium
extends out into the main restaurant to
become a main feature.
This 200 cover restaurant provides a wide
variety of seating areas; from the ground
floor Thai style sunken ‘Lanna’ tables to
the ‘Sukhothai’ private sunken room and
the exclusive VIP Royal Thai fine dining room
with it’s floor to ceiling glass wall which, tilted at an angle, provides guests
with fantastic views into the Palm Sugar lounge.
Dining alfresco on the restaurant balcony or on the Palm Sugar terrace, with
its umbrella shaped trees, provides the perfect setting to take in the unique
views of the famous city docks.
The contemporary Palm Sugar Cocktail Bar is accessed from the restaurant
via a glass sliding door. Hand made metallic wallpaper and pearlescent
mosaic wall tiles help to create the ‘glitzy’ night time experience of Palm
Sugar. Here there are champagne displays and private Champagne Lounge
areas along with a private VIP members’ lounge, which is called Club 100,
as it will have an invitation-only membership capped at one hundred people.

Lighting was key to creating the right atmosphere and a great amount
of time & effort was placed on achieving the desired effect for both the
S
outhall
restaurant and the bar. All the lighting is on pre-programmed dimmer
d
controls, which have been set to provide changing moods throughout the
day and night.
