Landy Tales: A Quick Swim
It was a August Bank Holiday, some 18yrs ago. I was driving my 1st Landy, a Blue s3 pick-up, with 2
spots lights on the top.
Well my then long-time girlfriend and I had been to Cheddar for a visit, and decided to pop nto Weston-
Super-Mare on the way back. On the way there I filled up with motion lotion and brought meself a
JAMES BROWN greatest hits tape for the journey back. Got to Weston and decided to park behind the
Tropicana outdoor swimming pool on the beach. Paid the £2.50 for the pleasure and went on our merry
way to have a little walk to Mc D's and get some grub.
After 45mins we returned to find loads of folk looking out to sea. "What they looking at?" I thought.
"Funny, I can't see anything, the tide as come in......BUGGA.......my Landy!"
They were watching the poor thing getting washed by the sea, all I could see were the 2 spotlights on
the roof. I WAS IN BITS....My pride and joy underwater, and nothing I could do till the tide went out,
which was about 3hrs away.
My world fell apart, I was numb. I had to phone my dad in South Wales and he came to help in his S2.
He said as he drove over the Severn bridge he could see that the tide was in.
Well he eventually turned up and the tide had not long gone out. The locals hanging round us, like vul-
tures round a dying animal. The sea had made a great big crater round the motor and we had to dig
under the chassis to get some kind of recovery ropes on to it. The use of a spare wheel and trolley jack
helped lift the poor girl up, and we managed to get the rope around something suitable.
The old man got his Landy wedged behind a wall and put the Capstan winch into action. It took us 3hrs
to get the poor girl out and off the beach onto the trailer. Got back to Cwmbran about 4am and slept like
a good un.
In the morning looked over the Landy to dis-
cover me new tape had gone, the rear
truckcab windows, most of our belongings
that were in the cab..... We did eventually
get her back and running again, used her
everyday for 2yrs after, but sold her on for
scrap in the end. But from what I can see
from the DVLA site the plate is still in use.
