THE LAND
The land is mostly Grade 2 with some Grade 3. The soils are mostly of the Hanslope series;
chalky till, slowly permeable calcareous clayey soils with some slowly permeable non-
calcareous clayey soils, usually suitable for winter cereals with some other arable crops and
some grass land. There is also some Melford series: chalky till, deep well drained fine
loamy over clayey, coarse loamy over clayey and fine loamy soils suitable for growing
cereals, sugar beet and other arable crops.
There are about 640 acres of arable land, 85 acres of parkland and 38 acres of woodland.
The arable land has been farmed in a rotation including wheat, oilseed rape and beans (see
cropping schedule) and is currently growing wheat and oilseed rape.
The land is farmed under a contract farming arrangement which began in March 2005 and
is now renewing from year to year with an eleven month notice period to expire on the
30th September in any contract year. The agreement includes the use of the agricultural
buildings at Brands Farm labelled 1, 2, 3, and 7 on the plan of Brands Farm building.
Across the estate, hedges, copses and woods form the basis of a small shoot which is
currently let to a syndicate.
