WELSH ATHLETES
GEAR UP FOR
THE UK SCHOOL
GAMES
Talented thirteen year old Joseph Rowland of
Llantarnam Comprehensive School is hoping to
make his mark in the sporting world this September
when he debuts in the Welsh gymnastics squad at
the UK School Games. The gymnast from Newport,
who dreams of making it to the Olympic Games,
was overjoyed to discover he’d made the team,
after travelling down to last year’s event as a
reserve. Now in its fourth year, the UK School
Games is considered a stepping stone to reaching
the Olympics, attracting the best school-aged
athletes across the four countries.
“Last year I was only 12 years old and even though I didn’t get the
chance to compete, the experience was fantastic; I'm really looking
forward to competing at the UK School Games this year,” said
Joseph.
“The 2008 opening ceremony in Bath was amazing; we met
Rebecca Addlington who had just returned from the Olympics
which was pretty special. Being Welsh, I can’t wait to see what our
home country will produce.”
Joseph’s dedication has already paid off, having won the title of
Welsh U 14 Mens Champion and Most Promising Young Gymnast
(Men) in 2008. Alongside gymnastics, the UK School Games will
feature the sports of athletics, badminton, fencing, hockey, judo,
