Welcometothe 50 thissueand,as ithappens,10th anniversary of
mondo*arcmagazine. Itseemshardlypossible thatwebegan thisjourney
in 1999.Backthenthingswerevery different; mondo*arcwaslaunched
asaquarterlysupplementtoour sistertitle mondo*dr(stillgoing strong
after19 years coveringthe entertainmentindustry)whenwestarted
tofind out about theatricallightingcompaniesgettinginvolved in the
architectural world.Thiswasvery much the colour washing variety from
the likesof Martin Professional, Griven andStudioDue. Idon’t mind
admittingthatwe didn’t knowour E RCOsfrom our Zum tobelsandwe

orreducing quality,webelievemondo*arciswellestablishedinthe internationalarchitectural lightingdesign
fraternity.Indeed, farfrom cuttingcosts,wehaveadded toour editorialstaffasof thisissuewithPeteBrewis,
formerlyeditorof mondo*dr,comingonboardasDeputyEditor.
Alothashappenedinthosetenyears-bothforthismagazineandfortheindustry.LEDshavecontroversiallycome
tothe fore, the incandescentbulb isbeingbanned, welaunchedThe ARCShowasthe UK’s onlyarchitectural
lightingtradeshow,and the professionofthe LightingDesignerhasbecome much morerecognised.Itisforthis
reason thatwehavelaunchedour ‘50LightingDesigners’surveywherewetalkedto50practicesacross the
world tofind out wherewearetodayin termsof turnover,staffing levelsandtheirthoughts on the industry
-past,presentandfuture. But moreofthaton page 41.
Itisatestamenttothe developmentof the LightingDesignprofes sionthatwecan coveraproject like the
GrandMosqueinAbuDhabi(page 78).Here, theclienthasengagedwiththeLightingDesigner(Speirs andMajor
Associates)atan earlystage, andpresumablyatreasonable expens e, toensurethatthe schemeenha ncesthe
architectureinasympathetic way .Itwould havebeeneasy forthe clienttosavetimeand moneyemployingan
engineerorindeed amanufacturertocomeupwithacrass colour changing scheme. Instead, byemployinga
LightingDesignpracticethathar moniouslycollaborated withthe l ightingmanufacturers,amagical schemehas
been created thathasput the GrandMosqueeven morefirmlyon the map of religious iconic architecture.
It’sprojects like thesethatenhance the valueofLightingDesigners andputsthemintheirrightfulplace
alongsidearchitects andengineers in the designprocess.
