Left A variety of shows - including a diving shows
- entertain visitors throughout the day, each requiring
its own lighting effect program
Ushio lamp necessary to allow the animals
to thrive.
“The conceptual requirements developed by
the client specified the need for environ-
mental lighting which would simulate the
cycles of daylighting including dusk and
night,” Ferreira notes. “The scrollers were
specified to manage these soft transitions,
as they permit the use of fittings and lamps
developed to support aquatic life. No LED or
automated lighting fixture would ever have
met our specific criteria in terms of ease of
maintenance, targeted illuminance and high
CRI values.”
Luke Delwiche of ETC London programmed
the Pharos LPC system that creates the
environmental transitions. “A lot of the
project was a lot more theatrical than it
was architectural, in many ways,” Delwiche
says. ETC and UAE-based Oasis Enterprises
provided the complete control system con-
sisting of Sensor CE racks for the dimming
and switching of the luminaires, DMX distri-
bution to the Wybron system and interface
with a Pharos LPC controller.
Pic: Hassan Mahmoud Bushnaq Sequencing the colours proved to be more
than a little tricky – the scrollers couldn’t
all move to the same colour at once, as the
entire tank could be plunged into dark-
ness or the combinations of colours would
appear unnatural. CD+M pre-arranged the
scroll palettes in three different sequences
of colours in order to allow the program-
ming of a complicated series of cross fades
using HID lamps that can not fade out or
turn off during normal operating hours.
And of course, the animals need to rest, so
when the facility closes for the evening, the
control system switches on a series of Thorn
Lighting marine-grade fluorescent fixtures
sleeved in Rosco R80 to simulate moonlight.
Work lighting above the maintenance plat-
form is also connected to the Pharos control
