Cab driver bites robbery suspect’s ear
A cab driver pulled into the apartment complex located at
3999 S. Dobson Rd. in Chandler at about 1 a.m. Fri., Aug. 7
to drop off his rider. According to Chandler Police Detective
David Ramer, after coming to a stop, the patron pulled a gun
on the cab driver and demanded cash.
Ramer says the cab driver grabbed the suspect’s gun, pulling
the gun down between the front seats, forcing the suspect to
lean over the seats and closer to the cab driver.
“With his hands holding the gun down between the seats,
the cab driver then bit the suspect’s ear,” notes Ramer. “The
Matthew Mailhot
suspect fi red one shot, striking the driver seat of the vehicle
and then responded in turn by biting the cab driver.”
After a struggle, Ramer says the suspect fl ed from the cab.
“While carrying the suspect’s gun, the cab driver ran after him,” continues Ramer.
“After a brief chase, the cab driver stopped and called police.”
The police were able to catch the robber in the complex, and the suspect, identifi ed
as 29-year-old Chandler resident Matthew Mailhot, was taken to an area hospital to be
treated for his injuries.
Once released from the hospital, Mailhot will be booked into the Maricopa County
jail for armed robbery.
