Q AND As
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF
I’m Perpetuum from Norfolk, Virginia. I started listening to
drum & bass back in ‘96 and was floored by the futurist
sound. I was dabbling in tracks around 1998 when I was
14, but didn’t really commit myself to production and DJing
until 2002. It’s been downhill ever since.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
Basically anything with soul, funk and vibes. Whether I’m
doing a darkside tear-out joint or if I’m kickin’ it with some
relaxed beats, I have to make it as funky and soulful as
possible. I try to keep my shit as close to my ideal of an
updated Blue Note-era sound as I can.
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR MUSIC?
Everything, really. Life, death, love, hatred, nature, industry,
beauty, ugliness. On the music tip, I’m a jazz bassist, so
jazz is a huge influence. Hip-hop, funk, soul, house, techno,
punk, bossa nova, trip-hop, ambient, rock, classical. If I
listen to it, it influences me.
WHAT PROCESS DO YOU GO THROUGH IN CREATING A
TRACK?
I stare blankly and slack-jawed at my sequencer for about
12 hours until something comes out. Usually start with a
break first, flesh out a chord progression or come up with a
bassline. Occasionally, I’ll pull something from my sample
library and go from there.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
Putting the final touches on my collaborative album with
DJ Ink entitled ‘Hard Soul’ on Colours Audio. It’s a 30-track
album featuring soulful beats, house, downtempo, funk
and R&B. Hopefully we’ll be able to touch on more than
just the drum & bass heads with this one. It’ll be out on
MP3 and a select few tunes will be on vinyl. Beyond that, a
few collaborations with Aspect, Friske, Thought and some
other cats, as well as a bunch of solo tunes.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE COMING OUT SOON?
Aside from the aforementioned album, look out for a tune
from Loxy and myself called ‘The League’ forthcoming RANDOMER
on Critical, a solo single from me on Translation, a tune PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF
from Friske and myself called ‘Breathless’ forthcoming I’m Rohan Walder from North London and I produce music under the pseudonym Randomer. I got into
on Vampire, and a tune from Generic and myself called producing through wanting to write music, and being introduced to Fruityloops and Cubase when I was
‘Medicina’ forthcoming on 31. about 14. I wrote music in whatever style that I was into at the time, going through phases of writing
jazz, funk, metal and electronic music. I got into drum & bass through the pirates Rude FM and Origin
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO TELL US ABOUT? FM, experimenting a little until I got seriously into producing when I was at Leeds University in 2004.
Just shouts to all my friends, family and my crew, The
Horsemen, Loxy and Ink in particular. And to the two-dozen CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?
fans I have, thank you for supporting me. Let’s try to make Deep, heavy, and driving bass music that tries not to get caught up in the limitations of sub-genres. I
it three-dozen in ‘09. like to use tribal elements and world music sounds, and to dip into as many styles as possible. On some
tracks I aim to create an atmosphere, other times to write a memorable riff based banger.
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR MUSIC?
The crossing of musical boundaries, the crowd’s unity in feeling a part of something innovative and
original, and the physical presence of a good sound system. A selection of music that truly touches you,
amazes you by its construction but, most importantly, does not take itself too seriously.
WHAT PROCESS DO YOU GO THROUGH IN CREATING A TRACK?
There is never a strict pattern that I follow, however I usually either start out with a concept or a sample
that I want to use, and build up a rhythmic / melodic groove on Cubase from there, and work on the
groove until I’m happy with it. I have mixing templates that I use to make sure I can get my ideas down
fast without having to graft over the technicalities too much. As I’m building the groove I usually get
ideas for the intro and possible B sections.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?
Producing new music at both 170 and 140bpm, a promo mix for my live show, and always trying to think
of new concepts to push the music forward.
WHAT DO YOU HAVE COMING OUT SOON?
A 12” single on Medschool in the autumn, half a 12” on Alphacut recordings later in the year, and a
dubstep track on Immerse Recordings mix CD.
WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS?
I want to play more live shows in the short term, to add more natural elements to my sound, and in the
long term, to become a part of a new movement in music.
