Every Second Counts
T
he NHRMC Foundation has received a generous matching grant from the Eshelman Foundation to purchase a Neonatal/Pediatric
critical care transport vehicle. Our goal is to raise $125,000 to match this grant so we can give every child those seconds that could
save their life.
The importance of a Neonatal/Pediatric critical care transport vehicle is essential to the quality of care for this community’s infants
and children. Dr. Fernando Moya, Director of Neonatology and member of the
Foundation Board of Directors, emphasizes the need for a dedicated Neonatal/
Pediatric transport vehicle: “We are never more vulnerable than at the time of
birth. Imagine a mother about to deliver a premature baby or a sick baby in a
facility that is not equipped nor has the medical expertise to care for him/her.
Getting out there to transport that baby is life saving. When emergencies occur
there is no time to wait in a queue for the availability of an ambulance, or to put
equipment suitable for babies in that vehicle in order to transport those fragile
human beings to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or a Pediatric Intensive Care
Unit such as those at NHRMC. Having a specially equipped vehicle capable of
shortening the time to transport such infants, and doing this under the most
stable conditions, would result in many lives saved and better services for a large
part of our state. Moreover, when a child being cared for at NHRMC needs emer-
gency services beyond the scope of our facility, time is of the essence to bring
that child safely and timely to another referral facility. The ability to determine
the best time frame to do this would be dramatically enhanced by having a dedi-
cated transport vehicle for children.”
Kimberly Eshelman, Executive Director of the Eshelman Foundation, com-
ments, “The Eshelman Foundation is pleased to make this matching grant for
the Neonatal/Pediatric transport unit for the Betty H. Cameron Women’s and
Children’s Hospital. We recognize this as a much needed resource for the hospi-
tal and our community, and we know that by acquiring this vehicle the children
of this community and surrounding areas will be better served.”
