Editor’s Letter
So there you are, trundling along in your Landy with water pouring down your accelerator foot from a
hole somewhere behind the dash. The windscreen is steamed up (although you’ve got at least 5 layers
of clothes on to keep warm), the wipers have a mind of their own, and you can see better out the side
window than anywhere else. There’s a horrible rattle from somewhere that didn’t have a rattle yesterday,
you’re cold and soaked, and you’re watching the fuel guage drop like a second hand thanks to your ve-
hicle having all the aerodynamics of a block of flats. It’s pure insanity - you really should replace it with
something sensible.
So why are you still driving it? Why do you put up with the oil slick on the drive, the leaf springs, the
2km turning circle, the unending draughts and leaks that no amount of silicone, duct tape or spare parts
will banish? Why do you pour every spare cent into fuel, every free weekend into having your ex-
tremeties greased, pummelled, bloodied and crushed?
It’s simply this.
Because every time you get into your Landy you can’t help but smile.
You may be mad, but the mere act of turning the key (whether you’re praying the battery turns over or
not) is enough to make your heart glad, to kickstart those dreams of adventure and mud, to awaken the
reckless idealism that is Land Rover ownership. And when you’re speeding down the road with mud-
flaps flying in the breeze, you’ll find you’re grinning from ear to ear.
And it’s this: our Landies take us where we need to go. Whether up mountain, to seashore, through
dense bush or merely to the corner store for a loaf of bread - they’re up to the task, no matter how old
they are or how impossible the route appears. They will keep on surprising with what they can tackle
and achieve. And every time they do so, we love them a bit more.
That’s why we put up with their moods and our discomfort. Because they’re family.
This issue of Landy Wave con-
tains stories of a few cousins,
aunts, uncles and assorted
Landy relatives from near and
far, doing the things they do so
well.
We’d love to hear about yours
too!
