I then took a piece of tube, large enough in diameter for my antenna stud mount to drop down, and with
a big enough wall thickness to support the antenna and take the occasional knock without deforming.
The base plate was then drilled to roughly this diameter, and the tube welded (Arc welding in my case!)
to the base plate. This mainly gave me the height, but also looks quite military I think. I then mounted
this and gauged a suitable height, finally deciding on roughly bonnet level. Cut off the tube and welded
a plate on the top. I then drilled this to accept the stud mount and also cut two notches so I could get
my fingers in to tighten the stud mount down when fixed inside the tube. This then gives me the 3/8”
antenna “socket” at bonnet level, ready to accept my long springer.
By using my “mast”, I seem to have overcome all the possible issues that I had and made my truck look
cooler yet again!
