The herd
is cubicle
housed
and achieves
a 10,000 kg
average at 4.2%
fat and 3.3% protein on twice a day
milking. The herd is fed TMR and
parlour top up in winter, with restricted
TMR, grazing and parlour top up in
Summer. Supplementation is also
afforded by zero grazing.
When making breeding decisions,
Ray looks for longevity traits, most
importantly legs and feet, and strength
(thurl width and chest width) and not
too tall. He also wants a moderate
increase in fat and protein percents and
yields and low cell counts.

About 10 to 15% young sires are used,
which have to be out of consistently
well classifi ed cow, so there is little
chance of an unfavourable throwback
and they need to be by bulls that suit
Ray’s breeding criteria. Selling bulls is
also an important part of the business as
her sells about 80 breeding bulls a year!
