ostering a sense of community among New York City public school

families is fundamental to building a school culture of success. During
the 2008-09 school year, OFEA’s programs, events, and publications
have helped bring families together and better inform them about what
takes place in their schools. In total, OFEA sponsored more than 100
family-focused events in the 2008-09 school year which were attended by more than
125,000 parents.

6,700 families participated in the festival, which of_fered arts and crafts, workshops, student performances, face painting,
and free school supplies for students.

OFEA organized “Children’s Day Parades” in each borough in May and June 2009. T_he events involved games, outdoor
activities, and a celebration of our children’s talents and cultures. More than 1,500 families attended these parades.

OFEA invited families to attend more than 10 free cultural events throughout the City during its “Spring Break Family
Engagement” initiative in April 2009. Partners included the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, Ellis Island, and the
Queens County Farm Museum.

OFEA helped families kick of_f summer recess during the “Family Reunion” event in June 2009. Nearly 1,800 adults and
Manhattan. Parents were also able to learn more about ARIS Parent Link, the Of_f_ice of SchoolFood, and other useful
resources that the Department of Education of_fers to families.

09 school year there were approximately 350 DFDs with 23,257 parents in attendance. OFEA will continue to sponsor
monthly district family days in each of the 32 school districts.
