ne of the most ef_fective and lasting methods of advocating for families is

helping them become stronger advocates for their children. Our advocacy
ef_forts for the 2008-09 school year have focused on empowering families
with a knowledge of their rights as parents of New York City public
school students and helping them get involved with parent organizations.
T_hroughout the 2008-09 academic year OFEA has empowered parents by successfully
updating and implementing:
• New Parents Bill of Rights
• NYC Department of Education Complaint Procedures
• Resolution Response Protocol
• Parent Leader and Family Pink Cards
• Revised Title I Guidelines
• Revitalization of District Leadership Teams
Parent organizations are a fundamental component of the family engagement network of
support. Parents are encouraged to get involved with the parent organizations listed below
– either at their school or community school district.
