CHIEF MOM
nder the leadership of Mayor Michael Bloomberg and
U
Schools Chancellor Joel Klein, students in our public
schools are achieving at record levels. Many people
deserve credit for these dramatic gains, most especially
parents whose increased involvement in the classroom
has been a critical piece of this success. A good example
is the number of parents who participated in parent-teacher conferences,
which rose from 826,000 in 2007-08 to 1,166503 in 2008-09.
T_he Of_f_ice for Family Engagement and Advocacy (OFEA), established
in 2007 to expand the Department of Education’s outreach to families,
has created this 2008-09 Annual Report to describe the results of the
past year’s initiatives and programs developed to engage parents and help
them access the information they need.
Over the past year, OFEA has ef_fectively reached more families than
ever. For example, Native Language Forums were convened in majority
immigrant communities to provide information on key topics in eight
In addition, 1,200 trainings and workshops were convened across the
city at the district level—each designed to educate, engage and empower
parents.
