he Department of Education is excited to build on the last two years of
T
successful initiatives and expand programs for parents in the 2009-10
school year. All of our popular events will be back, plus we are plan-
ning to add initiatives to engage, educate, and empower parents more
ef_fectively. In November, for example, we plan to hold a citywide “Big
Apple Event” embracing the cultural diversity of our schools. And in the winter, the
Translation and Interpretation Unit will begin of_fering translation services in
French. T_he T&I Unit currently of_fers translations in eight languages other than
English.
LOOKING AHEAD TO THE 2009-2010 SCHOOL YEAR...

Working with many partners, OFEA will expand workshops citywide that teach parents how to help their children
develop their skills in core subjects such as math, science, and social studies.

OFEA will encourage school staf_f and administrators to join their Parent Coordinators, PTA members, District
Family Advocates, and other parent leaders at various training sessions, including the Saturday Parent Academy.

OFEA will partner with the Of_f_ice of SchoolFood to educate parents about of_fering healthy and nutritious options
during snack time and mealtime. T_he initiative will increase awareness of alternative - healthy - options for bake
sales, candy drives and vending machines throughout our school community.

A new website, SchoolSourceNYC, of_fers families, parent leaders, and communities a wealth of information to help
them navigate important transitions in children’s education. T_his site gives every family free access to information
on topics like how to register for Kindergarten, how to choose a high school, and how to stay involved and
