TRANSLATION+INTERPRETATION
he Translation and Interpretation (T&I) Unit helps schools and of_f_ices
T
translates written materials, provides live interpretation services, and holds
information sessions for parents in eight commonly spoken languages in
the City (Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Korean, Russian,
Spanish and Urdu). In the 2008-09 school year, the T&I Unit received 9,800 over-the-
phone interpretation requests compared to 5,200 requests in the previous year. Since
2007, the T&I Unit has held more than 200 Native Language Forums to better inform
families who speak limited English. T_his past school year, forum topics included Eng-
lish Language Learner programs, Special Education services, as well as High School
Regents and graduation requirements. Since late Fall 2007, more than 1,400 parents
have attended these valuable sessions.
