Work
T
hursday morning at the school I used to work at was an important time for me. At 8.30am
I used to meet in one of the other teachers’ rooms and we would talk and pray for fi fteen
minutes before the school day began. We would pray for staff and pupils, for parents and for
the school to be a place of goodness, compassion, respect and honesty. We would pray for
those fi nding school diffi cult, those who had infl uence and those who we felt were drawing
nearer to God. These times were part of a consistent reaffi rmation of the reasons why I had
taken the job, times of connecting with the purposes of God in that place and to the knowledge
that God was with me.
All of us face the challenge of knowing that our work is highly spiritual, is of great value to God and
that He is actively present there. We need others to stand with us, pray with us and encourage us to
stir ourselves to fi nd faith for what God is doing in our place of work. These may be other Christians
who are colleagues or friends outside who will agree with us. We can have so much of that support and
encouragement when we are involved in church projects and so little where we spend the majority of
our time. So we must actively establish things to stop us losing heart and purpose, feeling isolated and
away from God in an arena where we should be standing for Him.
The problem can be in the way we think. What do we see as the territory where God has placed us? Can
we tune our antennae to sense what God is doing where we work? Do we think that the Spirit of God
comes to fi ll our churches with more people or to fi ll every part of the earth, including our homes and
workplaces, with His glory?
Now I work part time with DNA, a discipleship training programme that seeks to develop and equip
women and men to fully live for God in whatever arena he takes them to. I also still work part time in a
school environment. God is with me in both contexts and both are part of my spiritual service to Him.
