Don’t forget to
say thank you
Luke 17:11-19: ‘Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus travelled along the border between Samaria and
Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and
called out in a loud voice, “Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” When he saw them, he said, “Go, and show
yourselves to the priests.” And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was
healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him - and
he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, “Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one
found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise and go; your
faith has made you well.”’
Only one of the ten, seeing he was healed, came back praising God in a loud voice. In humble adoration
he throws himself at Jesus’ feet and thanks Him. He was a Samaritan, a foreigner, an outcast to Jews.
Why do we fi nd it so hard to say, ‘thank you’? Is it pride or even fear that if we acknowledge a blessing
we will loose it? Is it because of our culture and upbringing? Perhaps some, or all, of these are part of
the answer, but we must change!
Although we are not looking for a pat on the back every time we do someone a good turn, there is no
denying that it does encourage us when that person we help says, ‘thank you’.
It’s true that we work to please God and not men but it is also true that the Bible is full of verses telling
us to praise God for His goodness and to love our neighbours as ourselves.
Perhaps we don’t like ourselves too much and that’s the problem; we don’t feel worthy to be blessed.
Well, God’s going to bless us anyway and He’s going to use people to do it. By thanking those whom God
uses as His channels to bless us we acknowledge He is the source. In this way God and those
around us receive our praise and thanksgiving and everyone (including ourselves)
