Self-
centredness
not truly believe that God loves them; that they are of the greatest value to their Father in Heaven. This
is a world where so many are spiritual orphans. This is not the answer to self-centredness. We do not
need people walking around pushing away compliments and considering themselves of no real worth.
The answer is humility, acknowledging that God is in the centre of the universe, of life.
Humility is not thinking less of ourselves but thinking of ourselves less. If I want to develop this myself,
then I could do worse than give time to serving others with no benefi t to myself. Even better, I could fi nd
a way of serving others without them
knowing that it was me, so that I won’t be praised or commended for it. I could enjoy the satisfaction of
knowing that Jesus sees what I do and ultimately it’s Him I’m serving.
As has often been said, the word sin has an ‘I’ at the centre. The challenge here is about accepting that
I am not at the centre of the world, but God is.
