Many of us have sung the well-known Christian song which declares that ‘It’s all about you,
Jesus’. It’s a song designed to focus us on the heart of our faith; to remind us that at the centre
of it all is a Saviour who walked this earth 2,000 years ago.
I was singing it recently on the DNA discipleship year out programme that I’m involved in, and at one
point, through a slip of the tongue, I found myself singing ‘It’s all about ME, Jesus’. Disturbingly truthful
for many of us, I think. Who is at the centre of the world, of life, me or Jesus?
Sometimes this can be obviously seen in our desire for more happiness, more comfort, more wealth, more
possessions and more experiences. Sometimes it can be dressed up in Christian language with the need
to be spiritually fulfi lled, to enter my calling and see my destiny, using my gifts. But the challenge of
Jesus remains that we will fi nd our lives by losing them. The challenge remains to give up our lives for
others, to be a servant of all, to pick up our cross and follow His great example.
We live in a world where many suffer from low self esteem, a low view of themselves, where people do
