Genesis chapters 28 to 32 tell the story of Jacob, a man who always wanted to be number one.
Many lives have been ruined by the same ambition. When we are selfi shly driven we are never
our own man or woman.
In Genesis 28:20-21 we read that Jacob said, ‘If God will be with me, if God will keep me, if God will
feed and clothe me, if God will bring me to my father’s house in peace; then shall the Lord be my God.’
As far as Jacob was concerned, it wasn’t about God, it was about what he wanted. Jacob wanted God to
be second in his desire to be fi rst.
Later, he spent 14 years waiting for the right woman. Jacob desired Rebecca and got Leah instead. He
desired children by Rebecca and she was barren because of her bitterness and jealousy. That’s what
hate, bitterness, anger, strife and jealousy will bring. That’s what coveting what another has will do; it
will bring barrenness in ministry, in relationships, and in life.
In Genesis 32, Jacob wrestles with God and the Lord gives him what he desired all his life: ‘recognition’;
a new name, a new beginning, a second chance to live, this time for someone bigger than himself.
This time it wasn’t about Jacob, it was about God; about allowing Him to rule. It was about seeing God
face to face, about prevailing, about not giving up until the Lord blessed him. It was about
a new relationship; about being God centred instead of being self centred.
