Faithful with
a few things
By John Kirby
‘...W
ell done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will
put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
Matthew 25:21
This is a passage from the ‘Parable of the Talents.’ It says we should honour God in our fi nances, and as a result
God will give us true riches. Usually the emphasis in church teaching is on the ‘giving’ aspects of how we use
money. Whilst I agree with the principle and blessing associated with tithing and giving to God, I sense that these
verses have in some way been slightly devalued if we only think of them in that narrow context. I believe that what
is being said here is about being faithful in all aspects of your money.
Since Christians Against Poverty started in 1996 we have helped thousands of people with their fi nances. We have
helped a wide variety of people, including around a thousand Christians, whose fi nances are in serious trouble.
Many people get into trouble through events and circumstances out of their control. However, many are in fi nancial
diffi culties through a series of wrong choices made over a long period of time. Now in no way would I want to
suggest that anybody should be judged or condemned for fi nancial mistakes; God’s grace is suffi cient. However, I
genuinely feel that as Christians we need to place more emphasis on how we manage our money.
I have recently led several money management courses on which about 75 Christians attended. It
struck me how little budgeting, fi nancial wisdom or attention was given by people
