Gravenhurst: Marriott Residence Inn
18-month project completes waterfront vision

The new all-suites $21 million Marriott
Residence Inn at Muskoka Wharf is almost
ready to open, providing a critical compo-
nent for the Evans family in completing its
Muskoka waterfront project conceived sev-
eral years ago.
Manager Renjith Vengalil says special
care and attention to detail is required to
comply with Marriott’s standards. Trades
people are busy on the finishing touches for
teh 106-room, five storey building over-
looking Gravenhurst Bay.
Construction is co-ordinated by Cham-
berlain Architects and Construction Man-
agement in Burlington, which has done
work for other Marriott properties, and thus
knows the requirements of the 2,800-hotel
chain.
Vengalil said Chamberlain co-ordinated
the sub-trades with the exception of land-
scaping and outscaping, handled by Fowler
Construction, part of the Evanco Group.
While the project was conceived before
the current recession, Vengalil says book-
ings are encouraging and the project helped
the Gravenhurst economy through the win-
ter. “Because of all the sub trades working
on the project, a lot of businesses survived
on this. Several sub trades came from
Toronto, and they stayed in surrounding ho-
tels in the area. This helped the economy a
little bit.”
In an interview with Muskoka Business,
franchisee Greg Evans said the hotel has its
own unique style, but all the amenities of
the Marriott brand. “It’s part of a niche
market that hasn’t been filled in Graven-
hurst and is huge because of the Marriott
name,” he told Muskoka Business.
