Remember back to when we were kids and
we were first learning to count? Well, what is
it you remember most about that time? The
colourful abacus, of course!
The abacus is an early version of a calculator
invented by the Chinese around 2nd Century
BC. Also, known as the counting frame, it is
made of coloured beads inserted in a rod.
Nowadays, they are often constructed with
a bamboo frame and beads on a wire, having
originally starts out as beans or stones.
Around the world, abaci have been used in
pre-schools and elementary schools as an aid
in teaching the numeral system and arithme-
tic.
So, remember sitting, quiet content, sliding
the beads from side to side for hours, ahh
the good old days, I think I may still even
have mine…somewhere…
