One of the main things that attracted me to Alaska Ridgewood was the extensive range of things to do whilst you vacationed with them and in particular,
it was the brown bear photography I was drawn too. With
the spectacular back drop of the countryside around you,
you can go in search of the brown bear and take your own
photographs to keep forever your proof of fi nding them! Let
Ridgewood explain how this started.
“In 1978, along with our mentors and partners, we made
as far as we know the fi rst organized intentional effort to
offer wildlife photographers the opportunity to photograph
Alaska brown bears in their natural environment, fi shing for
salmon during the summer on remote rivers and streams
in the Kamishak Bay, Cook Inlet region. We established a
camp 8 miles north of McNeil Cove and made daily trips
to view the bears. This was done by a small boat gaining
access to the cove at high tide. Once at McNeil we met with
the Fish and Game personnel, to gain access to the McNeil
Falls. During these early years space was always available
for those without a permit. This was due to the sanctuary’s
recent establishment and lack of knowledge by the public to
the program.
Four years later, we started Alaska Wildlife Photography
Adventures, fl ying our guests directly to McNeil Sanctuary,
visiting the falls and the surrounding area.

While staying at the Ridgewood, you can combine your
Brown Bear viewing with the opportunity to observe the local
black bears in Halibut Cove. Because of the popularity these
reservations need to be made in advance of the upcoming
season.
