Diary of a DCP
I
ATTENDED a great CPD event in
since 1953
February at MANDEC. Presentations
included Child Protection, Radiological
Flexibility is our Strength
Protection and Career Development for Dental
Nurses. The day was organised by a tutor from
Manchester Dental Hospital and was hugely
oversubscribed, so much so that subsequent
dates have now been planned for repeated
events.
I was there to represent BADN. I had a
promotion stand and spoke to delegates as
Samantha O’Neill
they registered and had breakfast. There was a
very positive atmosphere and on the whole it was a credit to our profession.
My NVQ cohort has just sat its VRQ. Although some were extremely
nervous, all seems very positive this week about how they have done. So we
are all counting down the next six weeks until the results are received – It’s what can’t be seen that makes the difference
fingers crossed there will be lots of celebrating! Until then, it’s time to get
- to the patient
to work on completing the portfolios and workplace observations.
I have arranged with the child protection nurse in Bury to put on a
Thin cross-section - strong & translucent
training evening specifically for the dental team. I think that it is maybe

more beneficial for dental teams to be able to discuss concerns about child

has been well responded to and we have a full house of 55. I hope to make

this a regular thing and perhaps have two dates each year for teams to

utilise.
I recently organised an Infection Control Training Session for dental
teams in Bury. An infection control officer specific to dentistry from
another PCT came to deliver the training and it was most useful. She was a
good speaker and gave a clear and informative presentation which was
useful to me both as a dental nurse and as a tutor.
She discussed the Decontamination Health Technical Memorandum 01-05 –
Decontamination in primary care dental practices in great detail and what it meant Traditional design
for planning decontamination rooms, etc. She also covered basics such as
single use items, manual cleaning and waste. The training was aimed at all

members of the dental team and this worked fairly well.

Finally we have moved into our new premises and it’s lovely! We have a Genuine Valplast Flexible Appliances

nurse students in there as I am sure it will be beneficial to their training and
very enjoyable.

Each surgery has a lockable trolley for dirty instruments to be transported
to the dirty decontamination room. Once the instruments have been
unloaded, this trolley is wiped out and returned to the surgery.
Instruments are cleaned, placed in the ultrasonic bath, handpieces are
placed into sterilisation pouches and are then put through a hatch and into
the clean decontamination room. Here pouched instruments are placed into
vacuum autoclaves (on dry cycle) and once done all are then put into a
designated clean trolley and taken back out and put away in surgeries. There
are seven surgeries, so instruments are colour-coded. The system works
incredibly well.
BADN members will now have received their priority invitation to the
2009 Conference, which will be held at the Cheltenham Chase Hotel, near
Cheltenham, on October 23 and 24. The Conference will award up to eight
hours’ verifiable CPD, with presentations on a variety of clinical and non-
clinical subjects.
