ed up with chardonnay? Had it with merlot? Supermarket shelves can
occasionally look a bit samey, with bottle after bottle of the same grape
varieties stretching as far as the eye can see. One cannot live
by pinot grigio and sauvignon blanc alone.
A couple of this month’s choices are made from grape varieties that
rarely take centre stage. Quite often, these more obscure grapes
can deliver great drinking in styles people would really enjoy.
If you are a fan of chardonnay, try a viognier which is similar in weight
and flavour but has a touch of peach and floral character. Sauvignon
blanc lovers should look out for Spanish wines from Rueda, made
from Verdejo and Viura, and delivering lots of Sauvignon-like
oomph at generally lower prices.
In reds, merlot fans might try Carmenère from Chile – smooth as
silk but with a little herbal twist - whilst Zinfandel from California
or Primitivo from Italy might appeal to fans of shiraz, with plenty
of bold, juicy fruit and a power-packed personality.
