A Letter from the Editor
the
Time is flying by. I cannot believe that we are already in the summer of 2009. There are
North ShoreiaN
a few changes that you will notice with this issue of The North Shoreian. First, you will see
that I have added “Call-Outs” on the cover. This will allow you to quickly see what a few of
Charles McKenna
the features are about in the current issue. Another noticeable change will be the fact that The
Publisher and Editor-in-Chief
North Shoreian Magazine is now published mid-month. This change came about as a result of
changing printers and being able to fit within the schedule of the new printer. You will surely
appreciate the new printer when you enjoy the brilliant color of the magazine now. Additionally,
Thomas Reid
because we are published mid-month, I decided to label each issue as a straddle issue. This
Publisher and Art Director
issue in your hands is our June/July 2009 issue. Next month you will enjoy the July/August
2009 issue and so on.
Gala Scibelli
We have some great features this month. Joe Shortsle had the opportunity to expand the
Senior Art Director
scope of his Sound Waves column with a VIP Interview of Ritchie and Candice of Blackmore’s
Night. The Epicurean Quartet strayed from the norm too this month. In keeping with the
Robert Romer
theme of Health, Beauty and Fitness, the Quartet made a visit to Tiger Lily in Port Jefferson

for a healthy alternative menu. The Creatives ventures away from painters and turns to the

art of the written word with a great interview of a true renaissance man, Judah Mahay. Lori
Events Editor
Tutino suffered for the sake of the magazine by visiting a few of the premiere spas on the
North Shore of Long Island. Read all about it in her Spacations feature. Lori also authored
Lisa Hartman
the Staycations feature. With the way the economy is today, more of us will be staying close

to home this vacation season. Lori reminds us how fortunate we really are living on the North

Shore with an abundance of things to do and see. Olivia Connelly takes a look at some of the Advertising Account Executives
popular weight loss programs in her Fad Diet feature. Alexandra Frerking writes about the
Natural Beauty. Not really what you think but actually about how the make-up you use could
be causing long term health problems. Alexandra shares with you how it may be important to

funnel your penchant for being Green into your choice of cosmetics..
Anna Katsavos
Of course all of our regular columnists share with you their insight and pithy commentary.
Judy Ogden
The North Shoreian is blessed to have an incredible team of writers and I thank them, most
Dan Stahl
sincerely, for all of their passion in their craft.

Our cover is a spectacular painting which caught my eye and I immediately knew that it
Elizabeth Bojsza
was destined for the cover of The North Shoreian. Jennifer Tague Vomvas is the artist. Jennifer
Mark Snyder, ChFC
graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in International Business, but
Dr. Peter J. Stumpf
it was not until she began painting that she found her true passion. What started as a hobby,
Joe Neuschatz
painting murals on the walls of her children’s rooms, became a career when she enrolled in
Tom Adkins
the Stevenson Academy of Fine Art in Oyster Bay.
Nancy Dorney
Jennifer studied art at the Academy under master artist Atilla Hejja, learning classical
Vanessa Crosbie
painting and drawing techniques. As a student, she entered The Artist’s Magazine’s annual Shaughnessy Anne McKenna-Dusling
competition and was awarded first place in the still life category for her work, “Hail Pennsyl- Joseph Shortsle
vania”. A print of this work hangs in her alma mater. Jennifer began teaching at the Academy
Abby Rockett
in 2007, and was one of the teachers instrumental in bringing the Stevenson Program to the
Judah Mahay
Art League of Long Island, where she currently teaches.
Mary Ann Donovan
Jennifer lives in East Norwich with her husband and three children. She works in oils,
Senator Kenneth P, LaValle
and is interested in a wide variety of subjects. She enjoys learning new techniques and has
Grace Forestieri
progressed from tight realism, to a looser, more interpretive style.
Her painting “Rachel and Misty” is a very personal painting for her. It was painted as
Irene Ruddock
a wedding present for her niece, Rachel, and was taken from a photo of her as a small child
Olivia Connelly
feeding their beloved family horse, Misty. As you can imagine, the photo is very old, probably
Alexandra Frerking
at least 20 years or so, and it was of poor quality. Also, the background was not very nice to Lori Tutino
look at, and a flash was used which washed out the image and made for uninteresting lighting Maria Orlando Pietromonaco
-- all things which needed to be changed to make this painting.
Janice Dutkiewicz
The challenges in painting this picture went beyond changing the lighting and background,
Maureen Calamia
however. Because of the low resolution of the photo, very little detail was preserved. Jennifer
Mary Riley
had to study many other pictures of similar horses, and drafted two of her neighbors’ children
Sarah Battaglia
as models to help with details of her niece’s hand.
Honorable Vivian Viloria-Fisher
But despite all these difficulties, Jennifer just loved the subject. The way her little niece
was squatting down, fearlessly, offering a single strand of hay to this large horse, and the way
this gentle creature was curiously sniffing at it, presented a touching composition. It captured The North Shoreian Magazine is
a moment that Jennifer treasures, especially now that her niece is grown and starting her own

family, and Misty has passed on. So in re-creating it, Jennifer tried to infuse it with the glow

of nostalgia and the simple clarity of a fond memory.
