I look at sportsmen and can usually put them into one of three categories. The • Geothermal • Gas • Oil • Solar

ticed while at the top of his or her game. I know an Adirondack fly fishing guide that
will first teach you how to cast and then he will guide you to the rivers edge where

The second category is the avid sportsman. They enjoy and take pride in their
sports. They make time in their work schedule to participate. 20 rounds of golf a
year, or a weekend fisherman. Most of us are in this category, me included. I’m
pretty good at a few things, but never made that total commitment to one thing (ex-
cept, of course, my family.)
The last, and for some the most passionate level of involvement in sports, is the
sports fan. A fanatic also has various levels. I’m actually writing this on the LIRR
and I’m sharing my train car with fans that just came out of the Ranger game after
losing the game six to Washington. Surrounded by angry “blueshirts” I was secretly
humming the chicken dance song (for us Islander fans ) while understanding and ap-
preciating their fanaticism.
Now for you weekend warriors who want a few tips on enjoying the water and
woods of Long Islands North Shore. Late May and early June are terrific times to
blow the stink off. There are so many resources for you to use to find fun and excit-
ing out-of-doors things to do. Right here in the very pages of The North Shoreian,
you will find the Event Calendar or even great articles about things to do this sum-
mer. You can contact your local Chamber, yes, your Chamber of Commerce to learn
of more things to do in your area. From festivals to concerts, from picnics to BBQ
fundraisers, from Charter Boat fishing to the great new bike trails, we have an incred-
ible place we call the North Shore for the outdoor enthusiast.
Get up off of the couch and go and make few purchases for the upcoming
“Staycations.” These items will enhance your trips to the outdoors: Binoculars, a
field guide to birds, plants and animals, a fishing pole rigged with ten lb. test and
some lures recommended by your local tackle shop, a bucket or plastic bag to put
stuff in that you find along the way, a day pack, a seine net is great fun, and a plastic
aquarium to look at the cool critters, a kite along with some sport balls and a Frisbee.
Now pack a cooler with snacks and drinks, a blanket and chairs and your set for an
adventure. Drive north, find a beach, a park, a trail and explore. Beaches like Sunken
Meadow (which also has trails) are loaded with treasures washed up over the winter.
Blydenburgh Park is bustling with birds and animals doing there spring thing at trails
edge, and the fields of all the north shore open spaces are ripe for running around in.
Now get out there and be a sportsman and play at any level you like. Maybe this is
the year you go from beginner fan to an avid sportsman in your field.
