Pio Cesare
Italy
The same family has for more than 100 years - or four generations - been producing and ageing wines in the most famous
winemaking region of Italy. The tradition began in 1881, when Pio Cesare started gathering grapes in his vineyards and
purchasing those of some selected and reliable farmers in the hills of Barolo and Barbaresco districts.
The winery's output has always been limited through there adherence to the highest standards. The firm will not make a wine,
if it has not succeeded in producing mature and healthy grapes. The ripening of the grapes is carefully watched. The
harvesting is rigidly controlled, selecting grape by grape. There has always been a conviction that great wine can come only
from the finest grapes.
Today, the estate is managed by Pio Boffa, great-grandson of Pio Cesare. Under his stewardship, the wines of Pio Cesare have
become famous throughout the world. Great strides have been made in quality, and single vineyard offerings have dazzled the
wine press.

i5004 Gavi 6x75cl £12.84 £12.34
Made using Cortese grapes harvested from a limited number of hilly vineyards in the area of Gavi. The grapes are soft pressed, using
temperature-controlled fermentation, to enhance development of aromas and fresh and fruity characteristics. The bouquet is intense and
ethereal, reminiscent of ripe fruit, green apples and moss. The palate is full and flavoursome, yet soft, with a daring hint of green fruit.
i5005 Dolcetto d’Alba 6x75cl £12.84 £12.34
Grown in selected vineyards around the village of Treiso, Monforte d’Alba, Serralunga and Madonna Como d’Alba. The grapes are soft-
pressed, and fermented under strict temperature-controlled conditions for 6 to 8 days. The bouquet is intense, distinct and delicately grapey,
with a hint of raspberry and pepper. The palate is dry, supple and lively, with red currant and blueberry overtones.
i5006 Barbera d’Alba 6x75cl £26.02 £25.52
Grown alongside nebbiolo in selected vineyards in the villages of Monforte and Castiglion Falletto and from grapes in our own vineyards
in the villages of Serralunga and Treiso. Ageing occurs for two years in Yugoslavian oak casks of various sizes and in small French oak
barrels. This is a unique wine - full and brave, rich and aristocratic, yet soft and supple.
i5007 Barolo 6x75cl £30.63 £30.13
The nebbiolo grapes used to produce the classical Barolo come from family vineyards around the village of Serralunga d’ Alba. This
Barolo is produced through careful blending of grapes from different vineyards. Pio believes that the union of grapes from different
vineyards makes their Barolo unique. The grapes from Serralunga give a full body, the ones from Castiglion Falletto offer an ethereal and
tempting nose, and those from Monforte provide class and a refined nature. This produces a unique and inimitable wine. The grapes are
soft pressed and fermented at 25 to 26 degrees, in contact with the skins for 20 to 25 days. There is a long maturation in Slovenian oak,
well beyond the terms imposed by the D.O.C.
